    Anjeer (dried fig) burfi

    What is a burfi

Burfi is a popular Indian sweet, similar to a milk fudge. It is made with milk solids, sugar, cardamom and a choice of flavours such as coconut, almonds, cashews, saffron, to name a few.

    Benefits of using dried figs

Dried figs are a powerhouse of nutrition. They are naturally sweet and are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber.

They are also known to help pregnant mothers with digestive problems.

What do these anjeer(dried fig) burfis contain

They contain the goodness of dried figs, chewiness from the dates, crunchiness from the mixed nuts and are infused with the wonderful aroma of cardamom.

    • Dried figs – they are naturally sweet and add a depth of flavour. I used dried Smyrna figs
    • Soft pitted dates – I like using Zamli or Medjool dates as they are soft and work well for this recipe.
    • Mixed nuts – I used pistachios, almonds and cashews. But the choice is yours. You could also use walnuts or pecans.
    • Ground cardamon – they infuse a great aroma and sweetness into the burfis.

    How to make them

Dry roast the chopped nuts in a pan, on a low flame till they are crunchy. Set them aside.

    roast the nuts

To the same pan, add the chopped figs and stir well. Sprinkle the water and cook till they are soft.

    roast the dried figs

Add the dates, ground cardamom and mix well.

    roast the dates

The mixture will be very sticky at this stage. Add the butter to prevent it from sticking to the pan and combine everything well.

Finally, fold in the chopped nuts and cook for 5 minutes till the mixture is firm.

Place a parchment paper on a flat wooden surface and transfer the burfi mixture on it.

Place another parchment paper on top and gently roll the mixture till it is flat and about half an inch thick.

Let it cool completely, and then cut into diamonds or squares. Enjoy!

To achieve my fitness goals I daily consume figs, nuts and dates. This Diwali I planned to avoid consuming conventional sweets. Therefore, I tried this sweet, super nutritious, super quick Anjeer burfi.
It tasted amazing 😍. Infact I prepared it twice the same week.
