What is tahini yogurt sauce and what does it taste like?

This yogurt sauce is a delicious and healthy condiment that can be used in a variety of ways. It is extremely versatile and can be used as a dip, sauce, or dressing.

    You will LOVE this sauce.

    • It is high in protein and calcium, which are important for maintaining bone health.
    • It is a good source of antioxidants, which help protect the body from free radicals.
    • It has a creamy texture and a slightly nutty flavor, making it a delicious addition to any dish.

What makes this sauce so delicious?

Well, the (not-so) secret ingredient is Tahini.

Tahini has an earthy, nutty flavour from sesame seeds.

This magical sauce is created by simply combining tahini, yogurt and a few other pantry essential ingredients.

NOTE: Tahini may not be suitable for those with nut allergies.

Ingredients to make tahini and yogurt sauce

It is very simple to make this yogurt tahini sauce and it takes less than 5 minutes. Here’s what you need:

    • Tahini –Tahini or Tahina is a paste made from ground sesame seeds. Tahini is often blended into classic dips such as hummus, baba ghanoush and also drizzled over falafels and roasted vegetables. It is also used in a variety of desserts such as soft serve, cookies, cakes, energy balls, stuffed dates, etc. It is commonly used in Middle Eastern, Greek, North African, Iranian, Turkish, and West Asian cuisine and can be found in most grocery stores, usually in the international aisle.
    • Plain yogurt or plain greek yogurt– It is important to use full-fat plain or Greek-style yogurt to achieve the best creamy consistency. I do not advise using low-fat yogurt as it can make this sauce watery.
    • Garlic – Garlic adds a great depth of flavour to this sauce. I used fresh minced garlic but you can also use garlic powder.
    • Fresh lemon juice – As a refreshing element, you need fresh lime juice or lemon juice in this sauce.
    • Salt – To add flavour.
    • Ground cumin – Adds a rich and hearty flavour to this sauce.
    • Red pepper flakes (optional) – Sprinkle some red pepper flakes to make the sauce hot and spicy.
    • Extra virgin olive oil (optional) – Drizzle good quality extra virgin olive oil to turn it into a luscious sauce.
    • Coriander (optional) – Add chopped coriander for some freshness.

    Serving suggestions

    This sauce is perfect:

    • as a dip for fresh vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots or radish or with pita bread
    • as a sauce for roasted cauliflower, grilled eggplants or aubergine, roasted broccoli or other roasted vegetables, potato wedges, fritters or fried snacks
    • as a salad dressing
    • as a sauce for shawarma, falafels, falafel burgers, tacos or sandwiches
    • as a dressing for pasta dishes. Why not try pasta with tahini-yogurt sauce ?
    • as a topping for pizza or tacos

    The possibilities are endless!

Make this sauce in your next meal and see how delicious it can be.

    Storage instructions

Store this sauce in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.

    Expert TIPS

    • If the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out by adding a little water or milk.
    • If the sauce is too tart, you can add a little honey to sweeten it up.
    • If the sauce is too salty, you can add a little more yogurt or tahini to dilute it.

    Variations

There are many variations of tahini yogurt sauce that can be made depending on your preferences.

    • Add maple syrup or honey for a sweet version. Mix tahini, yogurt, maple syrup/honey, and skip the other ingredients if you make this.
    • Top with sumac or za’atar and add pomegranate to make a Middle Eastern style tahini yogurt sauce.
    • Add some chilli flakes to make it spicy.
    • Add grated cucumber for freshness.
