Who is Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid is a world-famous supermodel who began her modelling career at the tender age of two. She is one of the most successful models in the world who walked for various top fashion brands. She is a Los Angeles native, well known for her model work as a Victoria’s Secret Angel.
What is the Gigi Hadid pasta
In 2020, Gigi Hadid posted a restaurant-quality pasta recipe that went viral on Instagram and Tiktok. It is pretty much the same as the famous Penne alla vodka pasta, popular in Italian-American cuisine and is also known as ‘spicy vodka pasta’. The only exception is that Gigi uses pasta shells instead of penne.
The original Gigi Hadid spicy vodka pasta recipe received rave reviews worldwide from food lovers. Having tried it, I can vouch that it is worth the hype. The hero of this pasta is a creamy spicy vodka sauce, which includes diced shallots and garlic caramelised in olive oil, tomato paste, vodka, heavy cream and red pepper flakes. Gigi tosses the pasta, pasta water and butter in this sauce and garnishes it with grated parmesan cheese.
What does Gigi Hadid pasta taste like
My vegan Gigi Hadid pasta is spicy, garlicky and coated in a creamy, buttery tomato sauce. The bold flavours of caramelised shallots, garlic, the sharpness of tomato paste, the spicy kick from the red pepper flakes, the creaminess of the coconut milk, the acidity from the apple cider vinegar and the finishing touches with butter and nutritional yeast make this an ultimate comfort food.
Why not cook yourself a bowl of this luscious spicy pasta this weekend and chill with your favorite Netflix show? Pure bliss!
Inspiration for my no vodka Gigi Hadid pasta recipe
The original Gigi Hadid pasta sauce recipe includes dairy in the form of heavy cream, butter and grated parmesan cheese.
The rich and saucy pasta on Gigi’s Instagram immediately caught my attention. I wanted to create an equally (if not more!) delicious vegan no-vodka version that is banging on flavour and will keep you drooling for more. After a few trials, I finally nailed it. It is now my favourite pasta dish, and I am thrilled to share my vegan Gigi Hadid pasta recipe with you that has no vodka.
Why you will love my vegan Gigi Hadid pasta recipe
- My vegan version requires simple ingredients which you may already have in your kitchen and comes together in less than 30 minutes.
- The pasta sauce in my recipe is divine. It is garlicky, spicy, rich, creamy, luscious and irresistible.
- My recipe is vegan and non-alcoholic. I use full-fat coconut milk instead of heavy cream, vegan butter instead of regular butter, nutritional yeast instead of grated parmesan cheese and apple cider vinegar instead of vodka.
- It has the same lovely, buttery, divinely delicious spicy taste you would expect from the original version. Plus, it is relatively healthy and easy to digest!

How to make my Gigi Hadid pasta without vodka
It is SO easy to make my vegan pasta version if you follow my simple step-by-step instructions.
There is very little prep work for this recipe. You just need to dice the shallot and garlic. We will be using the shallots and garlic to make a luscious creamy tomato sauce.
To make the sauce, heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Once the oil is hot, saute the shallots till they are translucent.
While the shallots are caramelising, cook the pasta in boiling water. Make sure to drain but reserve half a cup of the pasta water.
Add the garlic to the pan with shallots and saute for a minute. Make sure the garlic does not burn.
Add the tomato paste and stir till it is deep red. Stir frequently to prevent the mixture from burning.
Add the apple cider vinegar and mix well until combined. If you are using vodka, add it at this stage instead of apple cider vinegar.
Add the coconut milk (or heavy cream for a non-vegan version) and red pepper flakes. Keep stirring till combined. Add less red pepper flakes for a less spicy sauce.
As a first impression, coconut milk might sound unusual in a pasta sauce recipe. But the flavour works perfectly with the savoury caramelised shallots, garlic and tomato paste.
Season with salt and ground black pepper, and stir to combine.
Add the cooked pasta, pasta water, and vegan butter. Stir till pasta is fully coated with the sauce and the butter is melted. The aim is to make this saucy. Add more reserved pasta water to achieve the desired saucy consistency.
Keep stirring and add more reserved pasta water if needed, to achieve a saucy consistency.
Garnish with fresh basil and a sprinkling of nutritional yeast (or grated parmesan cheese for a non-vegan version). Enjoy!
Is the Gigi Hadid pasta healthy
The original Gigi Hadid vodka pasta recipe is quite rich in calories.
A single portion roughly contains ⅛ cup of olive oil, ⅛ cup tomato paste, ½ tablespoon of vodka, ¼ cup of heavy cream, 100g of pasta, ½ tablespoon of butter, ⅛ cup of grated parmesan, seasoning in the form of salt pepper and red chilli flakes, along with some shallots and garlic.
This equates to about 1150 calories** per portion. It has sufficient carbohydrates for one portion. But it is very high in saturated fat (153%), cholesterol (70%) and sodium (155%).
A single portion of my vegan Gigi Hadid pasta recipe roughly contains ⅛ cup of olive oil, ⅛ cup tomato paste, ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 100 ml coconut milk, 100g of pasta, ½ tablespoon vegan butter, 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast, seasoning in the form of salt pepper and red chilli flakes, along with some shallots and garlic.
This equates to about 460 calories* per portion. It has sufficient carbohydrates for one portion. My version contains relatively very less saturated fat, less cholesterol, and low sodium, which is relatively healthy compared to the original Gigi Hadid pasta recipe while still packing a great amount of flavour and texture. Plus my recipe does not contain any vodka. I highly recommend pairing my vegan Gigi Hadid pasta with my serving suggestions below to add some dietary fiber to your meal.
Serving suggestions
This spicy pasta tastes great by itself. But it also pairs wonderfully with my:
Roasted broccoli and asparagus salad
or Kale salad with tahini dressing.
Storage instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. When reheating, add some pasta water or plain water to ensure it is still saucy. You do not want dry pasta. My vegan pasta sauce is also freezer friendly.
Variations
My Gigi Hadid pasta recipe tastes excellent on its own, but if you want to vary it slightly, why not add some roasted vegetables? Roasted bell peppers, onion, or mushrooms pair very well with this pasta.
FAQ
Which pasta should I use?
Gigi Hadid used orecchiette or shell pasta, which is what I used. But you can also use penne, rigatoni, whole wheat pasta or any of your favourite pasta.
What can I use instead of tomato paste?
If you do not have tomato paste, use a can of chopped tomatoes.
What can I use instead of full-fat coconut milk?
Full-fat coconut milk creates a luscious sauce and adds creaminess to the pasta. The best substitute for a cup of full-fat coconut milk is a cup of cashew cream or a cup heavy cream( for a non-vegan version).
Top tips for perfecting Gigi Hadid’s spicy pasta
- Use good quality extra virgin olive oil. It can transform the taste from simple to great.
- Use shallots: Gigi’s recipe calls for shallots, which are mild and sweet with just a hint of garlic flavour. They add a great flavour to the sauce. If you do not have shallots, add white or red onion.
- After adding the pasta in the sauce, the sauce may seem thin and light orange. Continue stirring by adding more reserved pasta water in small increments over medium heat until the sauce is thick, saucy and bright.
- Instead of regular red pepper flakes, you could use Korean red pepper flakes or Gochugaru for a great taste and bright red colour. For a spicy version use crushed red chili flakes.
- When reheating, add some pasta water or plain water to ensure the pasta is still saucy and does not burn.
